Short answer: To restart reading the Quran before Ramadan 2027, begin with 5 to 10 minutes a day at one fixed time, check your level with a teacher, repair only the letters and rules you have forgotten, then build up slowly so your Ramadan goal feels normal by February. Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around Monday 8 February 2027 (subject to moon sighting), so starting this month gives you about three months to rebuild calmly.
Many women carry a quiet feeling about the Quran: I used to read, and now I stumble. Maybe it was university, a new job, a move abroad, pregnancy, toddlers or simply a busy few years. The mushaf stayed on the shelf, and the longer it stayed, the heavier it felt to open.
This guide is for you if you can still recognise most letters but feel rusty, slow or unsure of your tajweed. It gives a gentle week-by-week plan from November to Ramadan, realistic Ramadan goals for different levels, and simple ways to fit Quran time around family life in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and beyond.
Why does restarting the Quran feel so hard?
Restarting is hard for practical reasons, not because your iman is weak. Three things usually get in the way:
- Embarrassment. Reading slowly as an adult can feel uncomfortable, especially if you once read fluently.
- All-or-nothing goals. Jumping straight to a juz a day leads to one good week and then another long gap.
- No feedback. On your own you cannot always hear whether a letter or a long vowel is right, so you lose confidence.
The Prophet ﷺ spoke directly about the person who finds reading difficult:
الْمَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ وَالَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَتَتَعْتَعُ فِيهِ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ شَاقٌّ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ
"One who is proficient in the Qur'an is associated with the noble, upright, recording angels; and he who falters in it, and finds it difficult for him, will have two rewards."
— Sahih Muslim 798a (sunnah.com/muslim:798a)
Stumbling is not a reason to wait. It is part of the reward.
How do I know where to restart: letters, fluency or tajweed?
Before you choose a plan, take a calm five-minute self-check. Read a short surah you know well, then a short passage you have not read for a long time. Notice which of these sounds most like you:
| What you notice | Your likely starting point | Where to begin |
|---|---|---|
| You hesitate over letter shapes or joined forms | Foundations | A quick Noorani Qaida review of joined letters and vowel marks |
| You can read, but slowly and with many pauses | Fluency | Short daily reading out loud, repeating the same page until it flows |
| You read fairly smoothly but are unsure about rules | Tajweed | Live correction on makharij, ghunnah, madd and stopping |
| You had memorised surahs that now feel shaky | Revision | Revise what you had before adding anything new |
If letters are the problem, our guides to what Noorani Qaida is and reading the Quran as an adult beginner explain the foundations. If rules are the problem, start with what tajweed is. The fastest way to know for sure is to read to a teacher once: in your 2 free trial lessons, a female teacher listens and tells you exactly where to start.
What is a realistic plan from now until Ramadan 2027?
Here is a gentle 14-week runway from early November to the first taraweeh, expected on the evening of Sunday 7 February 2027. Dates for Rajab and Sha'ban are approximate and depend on moon sighting.
| When | Focus | Daily target |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 (early to mid November) | Restart and level check | 5–10 minutes, one fixed time, familiar surahs |
| Weeks 3–6 (late November to early December) | Repair weak letters and rules | Half a page to 1 page, read slowly out loud |
| Weeks 7–10 (Rajab, from about 10 December) | Build fluency | 2–4 pages, split across two prayers |
| Weeks 11–13 (Sha'ban, from about 9 January) | Test your Ramadan pace | Try a few days at your Ramadan target |
| Final week (1–7 February) | Set the Ramadan plan | Write it down: which pages, which prayers |
The point is not speed. It is that by February, opening the mushaf is already something you do every day. The Prophet ﷺ said that "the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464, sunnah.com/bukhari:6464).

What Ramadan Quran goal should I choose if I am restarting?
Choose the goal you can keep on a tired day, not the one that looks best on day one. A standard mushaf has 604 pages, so a full reading in Ramadan is about 20 pages a day. That is a beautiful goal, but it is not the only one.
- Foundations level: finish your letters review and read Juz 'Amma (the 30th juz) correctly, slowly and with confidence.
- Fluency level: half a juz (about 10 pages) a day, which completes half the Quran in the month, or one juz every few days.
- Tajweed level: a full khatm at about 20 pages a day, or fewer pages read with careful tajweed and a translation.
- Revision level: revise the surahs you once memorised and recite them in your own night prayers.
Our free khatam planner works out your pages per day once you pick a start date and goal. Whatever you choose, reading less with correct pronunciation is better than rushing through pages you cannot read properly. Not sure which level fits you? A teacher can usually tell within one lesson, so try 2 free lessons before you decide.
How can busy mothers and working women fit Quran time in?
Quran time survives when it is attached to something that already happens every day. Some ideas women use:
- After Fajr, before the house wakes up, even for five minutes.
- After school drop-off or during a lunch break, with a small mushaf kept in your bag.
- Between Maghrib and Isha, sitting with your children so they see you read.
- Listening while following the text on days you are too tired to read aloud.
If you are a mother, restarting alongside your child can be powerful: they watch you learn, and you both have a goal for Ramadan. See our 14-week Ramadan plan for children. At Her Quran Academy, a mother who enrolls together with her son or daughter gets 15% off.
On days of your period: scholars differ on whether a woman may recite from memory or from a screen without touching the mushaf, so follow the view of a scholar you trust. Many women keep listening to recitation, reading a translation or tafsir, and making dhikr and dua on those days, then pick up their plan again without guilt.
Why does a female teacher help when you are restarting?
Most women who restart do not need a long course. They need someone patient to hear them read, catch the two or three habits that keep coming back, and say clearly what to practise this week. Many women also feel more relaxed reading aloud to another woman, especially when they feel rusty.
Her Quran Academy offers 1:1 live online classes with 100% female teachers, and has taught women, teens and children since 2019. Fees start from $35 a month, and you choose times that fit your week. Read what to expect in a class with a female teacher, or see our Quran classes for women.

Frequently asked questions
How do I start reading the Quran again after a long break?
Start smaller than you think: 5 to 10 minutes a day, at one fixed time, from a passage you already know. Read slowly, note the two or three words that trip you up, and ask a qualified teacher to hear you once so you know exactly what to fix.
Is it too late to prepare my Quran reading for Ramadan 2027?
No. Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around Monday 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting. That leaves about three months, which is enough time to rebuild a steady daily habit and choose a realistic Ramadan goal.
I have forgotten how to read some letters. Do I have to start from zero?
Usually not. Most women returning after a break remember more than they expect. A short level check shows which pieces are missing, such as joined letters, sukoon, shaddah or long vowels, so you repair only those instead of restarting the whole Qaida.
How many pages a day do I need to finish the Quran in Ramadan?
A standard 604-page mushaf works out to about 20 pages a day for 30 days, often split as 4 pages after each of the five prayers. If that is too much this year, half a juz (about 10 pages) a day or reading carefully with tajweed is a worthy goal too.
What if my period falls during Ramadan?
Scholars differ on whether a woman on her period may recite from memory or from a screen without touching the mushaf, so follow the view of a scholar you trust. On those days many women keep listening to recitation, reading a translation or tafsir, and making dhikr and dua, then return to their plan afterwards.
