Short answer: Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027 (subject to moon sighting), about 14 weeks after early November. The easiest way to prepare a child is to start small now: pick one Quran goal, practise it for a few minutes on most days, add a few duas in December, try gentle practice fasts in January only if your child is ready, and build excitement in the last two weeks. A teacher can set the right Quran goal for your child's level.
Every year, many parents think about Ramadan only a week or two before it starts. Then the first night arrives, the routine changes overnight, and children feel the rush rather than the joy. A little preparation, started early, changes that.
This guide gives you a calm, 14-week plan to help your child get ready for Ramadan 2027, with realistic Quran goals by age, ideas for duas and gentle fasting practice, and simple ways to make the month something your child looks forward to.
When is Ramadan 2027?
Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the evening of Sunday 7 February, based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. Eid al-Fitr is then expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027. Because each Islamic month begins with the sighting of the new moon, your community may start a day earlier or later, so please confirm with your local mosque.
Along the way, two months help you pace yourself: Rajab is expected to begin around 10 December 2026 and Sha'ban around 9 January 2027. Early November falls in Jumada al-Ula 1448.

Why start preparing your child in November?
Ramadan is the month of the Quran. Allah says:
شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ
"The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an…"
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185 (quran.com/2/185), Saheeh International translation
Children rarely jump from no Quran routine to a daily one overnight. Starting about three months ahead means:
- The habit is already there. By February, a few minutes of Quran after Maghrib or before bed feels normal, not new.
- Goals stay small. You can add one thing at a time instead of everything in the first week of Ramadan.
- There is room for bad weeks. Illness, exams and travel happen. A long runway absorbs them.
- You can enjoy it too. Parents who are not rushing can model calm, which children copy.
What does a 14-week Ramadan plan for kids look like?
Here is a simple plan you can adapt. Each stage adds one new thing and keeps everything from before.
| When | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 14–11 (November) | One goal, one anchor time | Talk about Ramadan warmly. Choose one Quran goal with your child and attach a few minutes of practice to something that already happens, such as after Maghrib. |
| Weeks 10–7 (December, Rajab) | Short surahs and duas | Keep the daily Quran time. Add one short surah or one everyday dua at a time, practised at real moments. |
| Weeks 6–4 (late December to January) | Gentle practice | If your child is ready and keen, try short practice fasts on calm days. Make a Ramadan good-deeds chart together. |
| Weeks 3–1 (Sha'ban) | Build excitement | Start a countdown, decorate a little, plan iftar helpers, and practise the duas and surahs your child will use in Ramadan. |
Our free printable Quran routine planner works well for the first stage, and the daily Quran routine guide explains how to choose an anchor time.
What Quran goals are realistic for each age?
The right goal depends on where your child is now, not their age alone. These are gentle starting points, not targets:
| Age | Daily time | A realistic Ramadan goal |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | 5–10 minutes | Recognise more Qaida letters, say Bismillah and one or two short duas |
| 7–9 | 10–15 minutes | Finish a Qaida stage or read more smoothly, plus one new short surah |
| 10–12 | 15–20 minutes | Read a little every day with fewer mistakes, revise memorised surahs |
| Teens | 20 minutes or more | A personal reading goal, improving tajweed, or memorising a passage |
If your child already memorises, our Hifz and khatam planner helps you spread a goal over the weeks left. If your child is just starting, Noorani Qaida is usually the first step, and lessons 1–3 of our online Qaida are free to try.
Which duas and surahs can children learn before Ramadan?
Choose short ones your child will actually use. Many families start with Surah Al-Fatihah, then the short surahs at the end of the Quran, such as Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas. For duas, begin with everyday ones: before eating, after eating and before sleeping. These come up every single day of Ramadan, at suhoor and iftar.
Our list of everyday duas for kids has the Arabic, transliteration and meaning, with a checked source for each. Practise them at the real moment rather than as a list to memorise. If your child is learning to pray, teaching salah at home is a gentle companion guide.
How can children practise fasting gently?
Fasting becomes an obligation at puberty. Before that, many families let children practise in small steps, only when the child is ready and keen. A gentle approach:
- Start with something small, such as skipping a snack or waiting a little longer for breakfast on a calm day.
- Choose easy days, such as a weekend, not a sports day or a long school trip.
- Make suhoor or breakfast filling and keep plenty of water before and after.
- Stop straight away if your child feels dizzy, unwell, very tired or upset, and praise them warmly for trying.
- Never compare siblings or friends. Every child moves at their own pace.
This is general guidance, not medical advice. Please check with your doctor first if your child has a health condition, and ask a qualified scholar about any rulings.
How do you make Ramadan exciting for children?
- Give them a job. Setting out the dates at iftar, choosing a charity, or reminding the family of a dua.
- Use a countdown. Children love crossing off days. Start it in Sha'ban so the wait feels short.
- Make a good-deeds chart. One small act of kindness each day, coloured in after iftar.
- Share a Quran story. Our Quran stories for kids are short enough for bedtime.
- Let them see you. Children copy what they watch. Your own calm Quran time is the strongest lesson.
How can a Quran teacher help before Ramadan?
Parents keep the rhythm at home, and a teacher sets the right path. A good teacher checks your child's level, chooses a goal that is achievable by Ramadan, corrects pronunciation early, and gives you small practice tasks so you know exactly what to revise.
At Her Quran Academy, children, teens and women learn in 1:1 live online classes with 100% female teachers, and we have been teaching since 2019. Fees start from $35 a month. If you would like to learn alongside your child, mothers who enroll together with their son or daughter get 15% off.

Frequently asked questions
When does Ramadan 2027 start?
Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the evening of Sunday 7 February, based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. The start depends on the moon sighting your community follows, so it may be a day earlier or later. Confirm with your local mosque.
How early should I start preparing my child for Ramadan?
Starting about three months ahead, in November, gives children time to build one small Quran habit slowly, so it already feels normal by the first night of Ramadan. Even starting a few weeks before is helpful.
At what age should a child start fasting?
Fasting becomes an obligation at puberty. Before that, many families let children practise in small, gentle steps when they are ready and keen. Ask a qualified scholar about rulings and your doctor about your child's health.
How much Quran should my child read before Ramadan?
There is no fixed amount. A realistic goal is a few calm minutes on most days, matched to your child's level, for example revising Qaida lines, one short surah or one page. Consistency matters more than length.
Can my child learn Quran online with a female teacher before Ramadan?
Yes. Her Quran Academy has taught 1:1 live online classes with 100% female teachers since 2019. Fees start from $35 a month, and you can book 2 free trial lessons with no card needed.
Is there a discount if a mother learns with her child?
Yes. Her Quran Academy's only offer is 15% off when a mother enrolls together with her son or daughter.
